Kim Okgeum-Park Hongjo, Hangzhou ParaAG Archery Mixed Doubles

Kim Ok-geum (63, Gwangju Metropolitan Government), an amputee, and Park Hong-jo (40, Seoul Metropolitan Government), who has a spinal cord injury, pulled off a thrilling upset to win gold in the archery mixed W1 doubles event.

Kim Ok-geum and Park Hong-jo defeated China 144-141 in the archery mixed W1 doubles final at the Hangzhou 2022 Para-Asian Games on Saturday at the Fuyininhu Sports Center in Hangzhou, China.

Entering the final four ends trailing by one point at 106-107, they shot 38 points to China's 34.

This is the first gold medal for Korean archery at the Games.

The team of Kim Ok-geum and Park Hong-jo, who competed together at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Games and lost to China in the final, changed their medal color from silver to gold after five years.

The compound mixed doubles event requires two people to take turns shooting a bow in 20 seconds per person. On this day, Kim Ok-geum shot first, followed by Park Hong-jo.

"The strategy was for Kim Ok-geum to shoot steadily and Park Hong-jo to finish without making mistakes. Both of them have a lot of courage and are good at competing."

In the final end, China shot 9, 9, 7, 9, while Korea shot 10, 8, 10, 10.

"We have seen that foreign teams are physically stronger in international competitions, and we have made improvements. The Korea Institute of Sports Policy and Science did a good job of designing a personalized fitness, strength and concentration training program for each player, and the players persevered and followed it well."

"It's not like they can shoot 11-pointers, and we thought we could win if we did our job well," said Park Hong-jo. My sister-in-law shot well and the Korean team cheered us on with all their hearts because they were thirsty, so we won the gold medal."

Kim, who has won medals at the Paralympic Games and World Championships but never a gold medal, said, "I endured a tough time with physical training and night workouts. I am grateful to my coaches, colleagues, and researchers at the Institute for Policy Studies."

"I will humbly prepare for a second gold medal," said Kim, who will compete in the individual competition on Aug. 28.

There are nine gold medals up for grabs in archery at the Games. Korea is aiming for three gold medals.

On the 27th, Kwak Gun-hwi (Gyeongnam Para Archery Association) will compete in the recurve open individual event.

"Kwak is in good shape," said Lee, who also qualified for the Paris Paralympics. We will try to win the recurve gold medal, which Korea has not won at the last two Para Asian Games, Incheon 2014 and Jakarta-Palembang 2018," Lee said. 19가이드03
