Hong Chang-gi, Park Byung-ho, and Alford go silent, but will they break out in Game 3 of the Korean Series?

LG down by one run

Game 2 of the 2023 KBO Korean Series between the KT Wiz and the LG Twins at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul on August 8. LG Twins third baseman Hong Chang-ki is congratulated in the dugout after scoring on LG's Austin Austin's single with two outs in the third inning.

The key to watching Game 3 of the best-of-seven Korean Baseball Classic (KS-7) at KT Wiz Park in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, will be when the bats of the two teams' key hitters, Hong Chang-ki (LG Twins) and Park Byung-ho and Anthony Alford (KT), break through.

With one win apiece at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul, LG and KT will meet for the third time on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with pitchers Chan-kyu Lim (LG) and Wes Benjamin (KT) starting.

KT shut down LG closer Ko Woo-seok in the ninth inning for a thrilling 3-2 win in Game 1 on July 7, while LG rallied from a 0-4 deficit in Game 2 on July 8 to even the score at 5-4 thanks to a dramatic two-run homer by Park Dong-won in the eighth inning.

LG and KT both came from behind in Game 1 and Game 2, as they were unable to score additional runs after taking the lead. LG scored two runs in the first inning of Game 1 and KT scored four runs in the first inning of Game 2.

Oh Yoon-seok plays great defense
Game 2 of the 2023 KBO Korean Baseball Classic between the KT Wiz and the LG Twins at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul on August 8.

KT second baseman Oh Yoon-seok celebrates after catching a hit by LG's Hong Chang-ki with one out in the seventh inning.

There are many reasons for the lack of runs, but the silence of LG's No. 1 hitter Hong Chang-ki and KT's No. 3 and 4 hitters Alford and Park Byung-ho cannot be overlooked.

Hong went 0-for-8 with a walk and a strikeout in the two games. Alford went 0-for-6 with a walk and two strikeouts, and Park Byung-ho also went 0-for-8 with a walk and three strikeouts.

Hong Chang-ki, the key to LG's batting lineup, had a frustrated look on his face whenever his pitches went straight to the plate and were caught in the dirt. 19가이드03

'LG Killer' KT Benjamin "I'm confident that nothing will change"

KT starter Benjamin reverses course

Game 5 of the 2023 KBO League Postseason Playoffs between the NC Dinos and the KT Wiz at Katie Wiz Park in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, on Friday afternoon. KT starting pitcher Benjamin reverses in the first inning.

Wes Benjamin, 30, a foreign left-handed pitcher for the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) KT Wiz, has been labeled a "twin killer.

Benjamin, who donned the KT uniform as a substitute last year, has been particularly formidable when facing the LG Twins.

Benjamin faced LG five times in the regular season this year, going 4-0 with a 0.84 ERA.

In total, he's allowed just three earned runs in 32⅓ innings. He's literally a sniper.

"I think it's because LG has a lot of lefties," Benjamin said in a recent interview with Yonhap News Agency.

He was referring to the common phenomenon of left-handed pitchers being strong against lefties.

However, Benjamin hasn't faced lefties or righties this year.

Benjamin has a .238 wOBA against righties this year and a .242 wOBA against lefties. That's not a significant difference.

Nevertheless, Benjamin has been extremely strong against LG hitters.

Most of their top hitters, including Kim Hyun-soo (0.182), Oh Ji-hwan (0.167), Park Hae-min (0.167), Hong Chang-ki (0.167), Moon Bo-kyung (0.100), Moon Sung-joo (0.000), and Austin Dean (0.091), couldn't get past him.

Of the LG batters who started in Games 1 and 2 of the Korean Series (KS), only Park Dong-won (0.273) had a batting average above double digits against Benjamin. 19가이드03

Kim Okgeum-Park Hongjo, Hangzhou ParaAG Archery Mixed Doubles

Kim Ok-geum (63, Gwangju Metropolitan Government), an amputee, and Park Hong-jo (40, Seoul Metropolitan Government), who has a spinal cord injury, pulled off a thrilling upset to win gold in the archery mixed W1 doubles event.

Kim Ok-geum and Park Hong-jo defeated China 144-141 in the archery mixed W1 doubles final at the Hangzhou 2022 Para-Asian Games on Saturday at the Fuyininhu Sports Center in Hangzhou, China.

Entering the final four ends trailing by one point at 106-107, they shot 38 points to China's 34.

This is the first gold medal for Korean archery at the Games.

The team of Kim Ok-geum and Park Hong-jo, who competed together at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Games and lost to China in the final, changed their medal color from silver to gold after five years.

The compound mixed doubles event requires two people to take turns shooting a bow in 20 seconds per person. On this day, Kim Ok-geum shot first, followed by Park Hong-jo.

"The strategy was for Kim Ok-geum to shoot steadily and Park Hong-jo to finish without making mistakes. Both of them have a lot of courage and are good at competing."

In the final end, China shot 9, 9, 7, 9, while Korea shot 10, 8, 10, 10.

"We have seen that foreign teams are physically stronger in international competitions, and we have made improvements. The Korea Institute of Sports Policy and Science did a good job of designing a personalized fitness, strength and concentration training program for each player, and the players persevered and followed it well."

"It's not like they can shoot 11-pointers, and we thought we could win if we did our job well," said Park Hong-jo. My sister-in-law shot well and the Korean team cheered us on with all their hearts because they were thirsty, so we won the gold medal."

Kim, who has won medals at the Paralympic Games and World Championships but never a gold medal, said, "I endured a tough time with physical training and night workouts. I am grateful to my coaches, colleagues, and researchers at the Institute for Policy Studies."

"I will humbly prepare for a second gold medal," said Kim, who will compete in the individual competition on Aug. 28.

There are nine gold medals up for grabs in archery at the Games. Korea is aiming for three gold medals.

On the 27th, Kwak Gun-hwi (Gyeongnam Para Archery Association) will compete in the recurve open individual event.

"Kwak is in good shape," said Lee, who also qualified for the Paris Paralympics. We will try to win the recurve gold medal, which Korea has not won at the last two Para Asian Games, Incheon 2014 and Jakarta-Palembang 2018," Lee said. 19가이드03

'Captain' Son Heung-min, 'Rookie' Lee Kang-in look to continue 'goal storm' into weekend [sports news]

Tottenham travels to Palace on the 28th and PSG travels to Brest on the 29th

South Korean national soccer team captain Son Heung-min (Tottenham) and newcomer Lee Kang-in (Paris Saint-Germain-PSG) will look to continue their goal-scoring spree this weekend.

Son Heung-min's Tottenham Hotspur will host Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in England on Aug. 28 (4 a.m. ET) in the 10th round of the 2023-2024 English Professional Soccer Premier League (EPL).

Unbeaten in nine matches (7 wins, 2 draws) since the start of the season, Tottenham is at the top of the league table with 23 points.

The team lost its signature striker Harry Kane to Bayern Munich (Germany) ahead of the season, but Son Heung-min has stepped up to the plate with the captain's armband.

After becoming the first Asian player to lead the EPL in goals (23) in the 2021-2022 season, Heung-min is back to his goal-scoring best this season.

He has seven goals and one assist in nine games. He was on fire in Tottenham's 2-0 home win over Fulham in Round 9, scoring the opening goal and setting up James Maddison's second.

Their opponents, Palace, are 11th in the league (12 points) and have had some defensive ups and downs this season. They conceded four goals in their last game against Newcastle United.

Another positive for Tottenham is that Son Heung-min is a Palace killer. He has scored seven goals against Palace since joining Spurs in 2015.

He also scored a brace in the first meeting between the two sides last season in a 4-0 win.

Lee, who won a gold medal at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, scored his debut goal for Klinsmann's A side in October.

Lee's club, PSG, will host Brest in the 10th round of the French Ligue 1 at 9 p.m. on Sept. 29.

PSG is currently third in the league with 18 points, two points behind leader AS Monaco (20 points).

Lee came on as a second-half substitute against AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League group stage on Oct. 26 and scored his first goal for PSG and his first Champions League goal.

Lee has continued his upward trend since returning to the club after scoring three goals and adding an assist in two October friendlies against Tunisia and Vietnam.

Their opponents, Brest, are fifth in the league (15 points).

With PSG ahead on paper, and with Kylian Mbappe, Gonzalo Higuain, and Randal Kolo Moani all finding the back of the net lately, it should be a comfortable win.

Hwang Hee-chan, who plays for Wolverhampton in the EPL, will host Newcastle on Sept. 29 at 1:30 p.m. in the EPL Round 10 home game.

Wolverhampton is 12th in the league with 11 points, while Newcastle is 6th in the league with 16 points.

Hwang Hee-chan, who picked up his first assist against Bournemouth on Sept. 21, has five goals (one assist) in the league this season. 19가이드03

France's 'war on bedbugs' also pops up on trains ahead of 2024 Olympics [sports news]

Every year, millions of tourists head to Paris, France, worried about pickpockets, hustlers, and high prices. Now there's one more thing to worry about. Bedbugs.

On March 3, Paris Deputy Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire wrote a letter to French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron urging a solution to the bedbug problem, according to the BBC and other outlets.

"As France prepares to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the country must urgently develop a plan of action against this scourge," Gregoire wrote.

French Transport Minister Clement Vaughan also wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) that he plans to meet with public transport operators to discuss the issue in order to "reassure and protect public transport users."

France has been plagued by bedbugs in recent years, with videos of bedbug outbreaks in public spaces such as trains and movie theaters going viral on social media.

In 2018, the last year of the bedbug epidemic, 400,000 locations, including hotels, hospitals, and apartments, were reportedly infested, and a report released in July by the French National Agency for Food, Environment, Occupational Safety and Health (ANSES) found that between 2017 and 2022, more than one in 10 households across France had bedbugs.

"It's mainly the movement of people that brings bedbugs," Joanna Pite of ANSES told CNN, "and their numbers are increasing because they are becoming more and more resistant to insecticides."

"We're seeing more resistant bed bug populations, so there's no miraculous way to get rid of them," she added.

When asked about the rise in immigration, French Health Minister Aurélien Rousseau said, "It has nothing to do with immigration," noting that "when (people) return from abroad, they may bring bed bugs with them." 19가이드03

"I was upset by Japan, but I hope the juniors will win again," says Kim Dan-bi

Kim Dan-bi looks for a pass during the women's basketball semifinal match between South Korea and Japan at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium during the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, on Wednesday.

As Kim Dan-bi (33, Woori Bank) hangs up her national colors at the end of the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games, she was presented with a bouquet of flowers to commemorate her retirement from the national team by her closest opponents in the final game between South Korea and Japan.

It wasn't all good memories. The women's basketball team suffered a devastating defeat, once again confirming the current status of Korean basketball behind Japan.

After the 58-81 loss to Japan in the women's basketball quarterfinals at the Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China, on March 3, Kim Dan-bi said, "I'm grateful to all the players who played hard. I, the captain, was not good enough and we lost the semifinals," she said.

Kim finished with 11 points, six rebounds and three assists in 34 minutes and 22 seconds of action. She was joined by Park Ji-soo (18 points, 9 rebounds) and Park Ji-hyeon (13 points, 6 rebounds), but they were blown out by Japan, losing by 23 points.

It was a humiliating defeat, but that was the difference between the two teams. Japan, the runners-up at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, are a powerhouse and have a huge objective advantage over South Korea. South Korean women's basketball was overtaken by Japan more than a decade ago, and the gap has been widening ever since.

Kim Dan-bi tries to break through during the women's basketball semifinal match between South Korea and Japan at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium on October 3, 2022 in Hangzhou, China.

After playing her final game for the national team against South Korea, Kim Dan-bi criticized the stagnation of South Korean women's basketball.

"They need to realize that just because we're good at basketball in Korea doesn't mean we're the best. I got complacent and thought, 'I can do this,' and I stagnated. "I hope the juniors don't stagnate like I did," he said, "and I didn't do a good job for the national team.

Kim emphasized the need to keep learning and improving until the day he hangs up his uniform.

"Just because you're paid a lot of money and treated like an ace doesn't mean you're the best," he said, "I thought I was the best (at one point), but I wasn't, so I left the team I played for a long time (Shinhan Bank) and moved to Woori Bank to learn more. I'm learning a lot from coach Satellite Woo. Even though I am old, I will continue to learn and try until the day I retire."

She also talked about the differences with the Japanese national team. "When I asked some Japanese players I know, they said, 'It's so hard to work out because the competition is so fierce. It's easier to play a match,'" she said. They have always overcome such competition to play for the national team," she said.

"I was one of the players who played when we beat Japan, but we lost over time," he said, adding, "I hope the juniors will continue to improve and work hard to become a national team that can beat Japan again."

Kim Dan-bi shoots during the women's basketball group C match between South Korea and North Korea at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center in Hangzhou, China, on Sept. 29.

Kim emphasized the need for South Korea to invest in the development of women's basketball like Japan, saying, "We have more opportunities to play against Japanese players through the Park Shinja Cup (which has been upgraded to an international tournament). We need to invest more and have more opportunities to gain that experience."

"If the players compete against each other and try to improve, they will do much better than me in the international tournament," he added.

South Korea will play North Korea for the bronze medal at 5 p.m. KST on Friday. Kim Dan-bi is determined to beat the North Koreans and bring home a Yuzong.

"I saw my older sisters retire from the national team after winning gold at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games. I wanted to retire from the national team like them one day. Even though I couldn't win the gold medal, I still want to win the last game and take home the bronze medal." 19가이드03

'Amateur catching pro' Jang Yubin takes aim at 'AG Golf gold' after 13 years [sports news]

Kim Si-woo and Lim Sung-jae play for PGA
4 players including amateur Jo Woo-young
Intense practice on the screen realizing the competition venue
"Play confidently with wide fairways"

Jang Yubin, the youngest member of the men's golf team competing at the Hangzhou Asian Games, grabs a 2-iron at Club 72 in Incheon. Confident in his long game, 한국야동 Jang often reaches for a 2-iron, a club not often used by other players.

"I think the most important thing right now is to believe in myself and play well."

Men's golf national team member Jang Yoo-bin (21-Korea Gymnastics University), who appeared wearing a hat emblazoned with the word "KOREA," said when asked if there was a "one-point lesson" he would like to receive from team seniors Kim Si-woo (28) and Lim Sung-jae (25), who are competing together at the Hangzhou Asian Games. "I think just practicing and playing with them would be a great learning experience. My goal is to get to know my brothers and follow them on Instagram," he laughed. Jang Yubin is an amateur, while Kim Siu and Lim Sung-jae play on the U.S. Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour. Korea's men's golf team is comprised of four players, including Cho Woo-young, 22, an amateur. Professionals are allowed to compete in golf at the Hangzhou Games.

During a recent meeting at the Club 72 golf course in Incheon, Jang Yubin brought up the subject of his dinner with Lim Sung-jae four months ago. "When Sung-jae came to Korea in May (to compete in the domestic tournament), we ate together, and he said, 'Don't work too hard, but do well,'" Jang said. "He said it as a joke, but it sounded like he meant it."

The men's golf team heading into the Hangzhou Asian Games is considered to be the strongest ever. Kim Si-woo and Lim Sung-jae qualified for the Tour Championship last season, which is open to the top 30 players on the PGA Tour's FedExCup standings. Narrowing the field down to the Asian Games participants, there are only three South Koreans in the top 30 of the FedExCup standings - Kim, Lim and Kim Joo-hyung. Their amateur siblings are no slouches either. Cho Woo-young (Golf Zone Open in April) and Jang Yubin (Gunsan CC Open in August) have made a name for themselves as the "pro-catching amateurs" by winning trophies in their respective Korean Professional Golf Association (KPGA) Korean Tour events this year. 성인웹툰

After going 'no gold' for both the men's and women's teams at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, Korean golf will be looking to redeem itself in Hangzhou. The men's team, in particular, will be looking to win their first gold medal in 13 years, since Guangzhou in 2010. In Guangzhou, South Korea swept the golf medal table with four gold medals (men's and women's individual and team events). Jang Yubin, the youngest member of the men's team, said, "It's simple, but I think it's the most important thing. I will do my best to reduce my score by one stroke no matter what."

For the past two months, Zhang Yubin has been practicing on a screened driving range that mimics the course at the Asian Games venue, Westlake International Golf Course. "I'll have to go to the stadium and see for myself the condition of the grass, but the fairways aren't too narrow. I think I'll be able to play well," he said. Jang is averaging 300.42 yards (about 275 meters) with her driver on the Korean Tour this season. That's in the upper middle of the tour. Because of her confidence in her long game, she often uses a 2-iron, a club that many players don't use.

Zhang Yubin punched her ticket to the Hangzhou Asian Games after winning the Korea Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship last April. However, the Asian Games were postponed for a year due to the spread of the novel coronavirus in China, and Jang has been preparing for the tournament without turning pro. Zhang hopes to one day join the PGA Tour and reach the top of the Masters like her "role model" Tiger Woods. "I'm not thinking about anything but gold at the Asian Games. I will play with no regrets and come back with a gold medal." The team will fly to Hangzhou on Sept. 25, three days before the golf competition begins. 19가이드03
